There is an exhibition of my work at the Scarborough Building along Congress Ave. between 5th and 6th st. in downtown Austin. This show is in conjunction with Art City Austin which takes place on the weekend of April 12 and 13. (see http://www.artallianceaustin.org/art_city_austin.html for more information). Still very busy in the studio as new commissions seem to keep coming along. Also have work at Art plus Artisans in the Austin and Houston locations, Gallery 163 in Dallas, Laura Rathe Fine Art in Houston, the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce, and Russell/Shaw in Austin.
January 2008
ModernAustin show curated by Carl McQueary and Courtney DiSabato is Thursday, Jan. 24 at 912 Bouldin Ave, Austin from 6 to 9pm.
Had a great EAST this year and all the holiday events, including two tours with Austin Art Start (austinartstart.blogspot.com) were lots of fun. My paintings are currently displayed at the new Metrohouse project (see metrohouseaustin.com for info), in the offices of Russell-Shaw (russell-shaw.com) and the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce. Mostly I'm working on commissions and replenishing my body of work after a great year. I'm trying to take a little break from exhibiting, but have a few things in the works for several cities. Look here for new show information which will be posted as the dates are confirmed. Happy New Year!

Here's to welcoming the new year awash in new studio construction. Several advantageous commissions and sales have made a solid finish to 2006. Right now Shawn is concentrating on these commissions and getting the studio finished.
Some good shows and a lot of fun experiences marked the last months of 2006. Check out the review for the Layers show at Davis gallery at www.cantanker.com. There is an interesting interview there as well. Artillery gallery went out with a bang during a very well attended East Austin Studio Tour. The show at the Oveta Culp Library Gallery in Killeen included a revealing Artist Talk with students at Central Texas College. Temporal Happiness was the brainchild of Sean Gaulager and Courtney DiSabato and featured a whole array of fantastic artists. The Post Geography show gave Shawn a chance to display the new Sliver Paintings and Dots he has been working on recently.
The Sliver Paintings are long narrow strips that have a depth of 2 to 3 inches and are painted on stretched canvas. Both of these features relate them to the larger paintings in Shawn Camp's body of work. However, the Sliver paintings compress the imagery laterally to as small as 1/2 of an inch wide. The viewer can move in only two directions as they look at the painting. This limitation raises the question of whether they are even paintings at all, as the depth of the canvas is significantly greater than the width.
After feeling good about compressing the space laterally, it just seemed to make sense to compress it vertically as well. Thus sprang the whole series of paintings loosely labeled as Dots. These paintings retain the 2 to 3 inch depth, but extend only 1/2 to 2 inches in height and width. This compresses the space of the painting to the point where all the energy is focussed on a single geographical location, sort of like all the matter in the universe just before the big bang. In this tiny amount of space to work with, the application of the paint takes on even more significance than in the larger works. In some of the Dots the thickness of the paint can be 2 times the width of the painting itself and the viewer is invited to examine the surface with a new level of intimacy.
Look for an open studio party as soon as construction is completed. Also there is talk of a show in Dallas in the comming year. More news to come.
October 2006
It has really been a great Fall so far. The Layers show was a lot of fun and so was the trip to Marfa.
The CTC show in Killeen, Texas will start its run on the week of October 16th. Coming soon is Shawn's solo show at Artillery Gallery. It will open on Saturday, November 4th from 7 to 9pm. Also be on the lookout for the East Austin Studio Tour which happens the weekend of Nov. 18th. Artillery Gallery will host our own festivities throughout the whole weekend.
August 2006
Layers will open Saturday, September 9th from 7 to 9pm at the Davis Gallery. Davis is located at 837 West 12th Street, Austin, Texas 78701. Call 512-477-4929 or visit www.davisgalleryaustin.com.
This show will feature many of the new paintings just added to the artwork section. It will encompass a wide breadth of paintings, but it focusses especially on new work completed over the summer. A brand new series of long narrow paintings that question the definition of painting itself will be introduced in the exhibition along with work that imbues a quietness and subtlety not present in the Shawn's earlier work. The organic wooden sculptures of Caprice Pierucci Taniguchi are the perfect complement to the expressive, quiet coloration of Shawn's paintings.
Black and White, the new group show at Artillery Gallery (701 Tillery Street in East Austin) will open Saturday, September 2nd from 7 to 10pm. This show features the work of member artists at Artillery Gallery limiting themselves to the absence of color.
Shawn's work will be featured at Marfa's Building 98 for the annual Chinati Open House Weekend
from October 6th through the 8th. More specifics to come.
Also in late October there will be a solo show at Central Texas College in Killeen, Texas.

Fall 2005
The summer was sort of hot but very productive in the new South Austin
studio. It wasn't long before Shawn fully replaced work lost in the fire
(and then some) with a set of paintings that retain the ambition of previous
work but also take on more subtlety and nuance. With a strong new body of
paintings to show, Shawn is prepared for a relatively busy Fall schedule
including several faculty shows, a foray into the East Austin Studio Tour
with his good friend Daniel Burns (burnsart.com), the Blue Genie Art Bazaar,
several group exhibitions around the central Texas region, and a possible
solo show in the works. For up-to-date information regarding the exhibition
of Shawn's work or if you'd like to visit him in his studio, just send him
an email at shawn@shawnrcamp.com
